part 3: City walk and a visit to the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

First, we drove to a nice lookout on a small hill (Sparrow Hills, Воробьёвы го́ры).

Next was a visit to the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. The original church was built during the 19th century and it was destroyed in 1931 on the order of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin. The demolition was supposed to make way for a colossal Palace of the Soviets (which was never built). The current church was rebuilt in a very short timeframe, during 1995–2000.

As the cathedral is a modern building, we could take the elevator to get to the top. Unfortunately, it was a littly foggy / cloudy. On Saturday, temperatures were slightly higher, around zero degrees Celsius.

The Kremlin

After a nice visit to the Cathedral of Christ the Savior (no pictures inside were allowed), we took the buses in order to have a nice lunch at the ***** Hotel Baltschug Kempinski. Everybody was having fun :-)

The president is fenced off!

Party like a Russian!

Getting around Moscow in style!

After lunch, it was time for some cultural activities: A visit to the Tretyakov Gallery where we would see some masterpieces of Russian art from the 18th to 19th century. On the way to the gallery, we walked across Moskva river on the Luzhkov Bridge where we saw the Trees of Love.
